10 Foods That Are Banned in Other Countries

I came across this while perusing the interwebs the other day and it's pretty horrifying... If you want to start somewhere, this would be a good first move seeing as the rest of the world already has a jumpstart on us.

1) Farm-raised salmon: I'm a HUGE lover of salmon, so this one was particularly pertinent to me. Remember this rule when making your salmon selection: Atlantic = farm-raised, Alaskan Sockeye = guaranteed to be wild.

2) GMO Papaya: Hawaiian papaya is dirty papaya, but it doesn't always specify so just look for that little "Non-GMO Project Verified" label.

3)Ractopamine-Tainted Meat: 45% of American pigs are tainted; 30% of cattle; and an unknown percentage of turkeys. It affects our cardiovascular systems, can cause hyperactivity, may cause chromosomal abnormalities, and behavioral changes (especially in children). YIKES

4) Flame Retardant Drinks (BVO): Brominated vegetable oil is most commonly found in citrus-flavored sodas and sports drinks.

5) Processed Foods with Artificial Colors and Dyes: The big one to look out for here is boxed Mac N' Cheese; however, apparently Kraft has recently announced that they are removing these ingredients from their SpongeBob SquarePants pasta, Halloween and winter themed pasta, Nickelodeon's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle pasta, and DreamWorks' How to Train Your Dragon 2 pasta. A start.

6) Arsenic-Laced Chicken: Enough said. Just eww.

7) Bread with Potassium Bromate: Look for products from Pepperidge Farm, as these are confirmed unbromated and safe.

8) Olestra/Olean: This funky ingredient was created by Proctor & Gamble for chips and french fries, so definitely stay on the lookout for this ingredient!

9) Preservatives BHA & BHT: Breakfast cereal, nut mixes, chewing gum, butter spread, meat, dehydrated potatoes, and beer...just to name a few of the common offenders. These preservatives are known carcinogens.

10) Milk and Dairy Products with rBGH (Posilac): It MUST have the rBGH or rBST-free label to make the grade!
